About Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University was founded in 1874, under the name of Central University, being established as a teacher's college in 1906, by the Kentucky General Assembly, changing the university's name in Kentucky State Normal School. After having its name changed several times over the years, the university officially became known as Eastern Kentucky University, in 1966.



EKU consists of 5 different colleges, offering students more than 160 degree programs in various fields of study including arts and sciences, business and technology, as well as education and health sciences. The athletic teams at EKU are known as the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, which compete in the Ohio Valley Conference, as well as the NCAA's Division I, being best known for their achievements in football and basketball.

Facts & Short history of Richmond

Richmond City was founded in 1798, by Colonel John Miller, who served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. According to the local story, the colonel was attracted by the friendly Indian tribes and the uncommonly good spring water. The city officially got its name on July 4th, 1798, being named after the birthplace of Miller, in Virginia. Between 1990 and 2000, Richmond was the fastest growing city in the south and in Kentucky, being known today as the 6th largest city in the state, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 33 000 inhabitants (2008).


Richmond City has a warm climate during summer, with temperatures that tend to be as high as 86°F (July), and cold during winter, when the city experiences cold temperatures as low as 22°F (January). The average annual precipitation is 43.65 inches, and the wettest month of the year is considered to be June, with an average rainfall of 4.75 inches.
